A resistance gene in common bean to Clover yellow vein virus is tightly linked with bc-3 gene which confers resistance to Bean common mosaic virus. Phytopathology. 96:564. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: A strain of Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV) that causes severe mosaic, top necrosis, stunting, and pod necrosis on infected plants has been plaguing snap bean production in the Great Lakes and Northeastern regions of the US since 2003. In preliminary virus screening experiments to identify resistance to ClYVV, the host differentials for Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and Bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) were mechanically inoculated with the necrosis-inducing strain of ClYVV. Host response to ClYVV indicated that lines with the bc-3 gene may be resistant to the virus. Based on these results, a recombinant inbred population (R31) derived from Raven (I + bc-3) and I9365 (I) was evaluated for potential resistance to ClYVV. All 52 R31 lines with the bc-3 gene for resistance to BCMV and BCMNV were resistant to ClYVV. All 51 R31 lines lacking bc-3 were susceptible to ClYVV except one line that lacked bc-3 but was resistant to the virus. This putative recombinant individual suggests that the gene conferring resistance to ClYVV in the R31 populations is tightly linked (<1 cM) with the bc-3 gene. Nine additional dry bean lines with I + bc-3 or bc-3 alone inoculated with ClYVV remained symptomless after 50 days and were negative by RT-PCR. These results further demonstrate that resistance to ClYYV is tightly linked with the bc-3 gene. |
