Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Division, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Nebraska, released a set of forage sorghum and a set of grain sorghum lines near-isogenic for bmr-6 (reduced CAD activity) and bmr-12 (reduced OMT activity) in January 2005. Both genes reduced lignin concentration in the stover when compared to the wild-type. However, cell walls of the bmr-12 near-isolines were generally more readily digested than cell walls of the bmr-6 near-isolines. Since the release of these near-isolines in 2005, a subset of these near-isolines containing stacked bmr-6 and bmr-12 has also been developed and has been submitted for consideration for release. A set of near-isogenic hybrids has also been developed and is undergoing extensive evaluation in field trials. More complete details of individual and stacked gene effects on biomass composition and potential conversion efficiency will be provided. Seed of the officially released near-isolines are publicly available upon request. Biomass tissue of these lines from replicated field trials is also available for collaborative research through a Material Transfer Agreement.
