Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: USDA VetNet commenced in May 2004 with submission of Salmonella isolates and in December 2005, Campylobacter isolates were added to the program. The objectives of USDA VetNet are to determine PFGE patterns of Salmonella and Campylobacter isolates submitted to the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), to compare USDA VetNet and PulseNet PFGE patterns, and to use the comparative data for surveillance and investigation of food-borne illness outbreaks. In addition, these data will also assist at the farm level through study of clonal dissemination. By December 2006, 11,724 patterns had been submitted to the VetNet Salmonella database. Isolates were restricted with a single enzyme, XbaI, and data were analyzed using BioNumerics. The most common serotypes in the database are Kentucky and Typhimurium while the most common patterns in the database are Kentucky patterns JGPX01.0003 and JGPX01.0001. Future objectives for VetNet include web based access to enable participants to view and submit patterns. |
