Fate of Triclosan and Triclocarban in Land-Applied Biosolids. Meeting Abstract. p. 65. Interpretive Summary: . Technical Abstract: The heavily-used antimicrobials, triclosan and triclocarbon, are commonly present in biosolids generated in waste water treatment plants. A common practice for handling biosolids is to use them as soil amendments. We have embarked on a cooperative study with the Blue Plains Waste Water Treatment Plant to determine the presence of these contaminants in commercially run farms that have received multiple biosolids applications, some for more than four years. Soil from these sites are being examined to see what typical concentrations of triclosan and triclocarbon are observed. Initial data suggest that the triclocarban is more recalcitrant than triclosan. These data are being compared to a control site where no biosolids have been applied. Additionally, results from a timed study will be reported where biosolids with known levels of triclosan and triclocarban were applied and soils have been sampled and analyzed over time in order to determine their fate. |
