Unlike Canada, the two native-born US cases of BSE are atypical and found in very old animals. The US has screened 400,000 animals and found three positive cases, only two were native born. These and other measures have been evaluated by an expert panel of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The expert panel recommended that the United States be designated as a “controlled risk” for BSE. This recommendation probably will be formally adopted by the OIE in May of this year. |
