Allelar sequences, substrates, and insect resistance conferred by a maize anionic peroxidase [abstract]. National Entomological Society of America Annual Meeting. Abstract No. D0672. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Sequencing of a peroxidase gene identified through genetic and electrophoretic studies as Px11 from representative maize inbreds indicated several “silent” changes plus the presence of an additional codon in some lines. The sequence changes influenced the relative activity towards ferulic vs. coumaric acid. Expression of a representative clone in maize callus conferred more rapid browning and enhanced insect resistance to Helicoverpa zea and Spodoptera frugiperda as indicated by smaller weights of individuals feeding on the peroxidase transformed callus compared to beta-glucuronidase expressing transformant control callus. |
