Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: An experimental feeding trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy of florfenicol (FFC) in controlling Streptococcus iniae infection in sunshine bass (SB), Morone chrysops female Morone saxatilis male. Doses of FFC tested were 0, 5, 10, 15 and 30 mg active ingredient /kg of fish body weight (BW)/d. Administration of medicated feed started within 22 to 24 h post challenge by waterborne exposure to virulent S. iniae. The FFC medication was continued for 10 consecutive days, followed by a 25 d post treatment observation. At the experiment conclusion, FFC medicated feed for 10 d at 5, 10, 15 and 30 mg / kg BW/d significantly increased (P<0.05) the survival of S. iniae infected SB from 4.2 percent in the challenged non-medicated positive control group to 69.2, 86.7, 94.2 and 94.2 percent, respectively. Survival was significantly higher in the 15 and 30 mg treatments than the 5 mg treatment with no significant difference among the treatments 10 mg and higher. Survival curve analysis using logrank test indicated no significant difference (P less than 0.05) between the 10 and 15 mg curves but significant difference between the 5 and 10 mg. At the conclusion of the experiment no carriers were detected in any challenged group receiving FFC medicated diet while the bacterium was recovered from the non-medicated challenged survivors of the infection. The results of the experiment suggest the optimum therapeutic dose of FFC is between 10 and 15 mg/kg BW/d for 10 d.
