Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This review is meant to give a general technical review of the state-of-the-art in process technology for the biochemical conversion of lignocellulose to fuel ethanol. The proceeding details the chemical structure of biomass and basic process steps needed for extracting carbohydrates as sugars and their fermentation to ethanol. More detailed information is given for each of the major steps involved: pretreatment, enzymatic conversion of carbohydrates to sugars, and fermentation of sugars to ethanol. The review ends by discussing future needs in research and current commercialization efforts.
