Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The presentation will give an overview of the capabilities, infrastructure, and current and past research of the unique 1050-ac experimental watershed facility (NAEW) operated by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service near Coshocton, Ohio. The NAEW drains into tributaries of the Ohio River. The research conducted at the NAEW facility focuses on the effects of land management practices found throughout the Ohio River Basin on hydrology and water quality. Examples of the wide ranging research topics include a landmark study of the effects of surface mining and reclamation on hydrology and water quality, conservation tillage, crop rotations, no tillage, pasture management, land application of manures to frozen soil, effectiveness of filter socks for controlling pesticides, land application of paper mill sludge to surface mines, and urbanization. Examples of related studies include evapotranspiration, storm modeling for short time increment precipitation, soil carbon sequestration, hydrological instrumentation development, research on simple methods for evaluating the effectiveness of best management practices, and curve numbers. Research at the NAEW has had substantial impact in many areas of watershed science. The NAEW is a resource for water-resource professionals, agricultural producers, state and Federal agencies, universities, and consultants, and has impacts nationally and internationally.
