Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The lesser mealworm beetle Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) is a serious, cosmopolitan pest in poultry production facilities, consuming grain, carrying disease organisms, and causing structural damage in poultry house walls. Pheromones have been described for many economically important beetle species, but not for the lesser mealworm. Emissions of volatiles from the beetles were studied with the goal of identifying likely pheromone components. Several male-specific compounds were characterized and evaluated for behavioral activity.
