Gene expression responses to highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus infections in ducks [abstract]. 145th American Medical Association Annual Meeting, July 20-23, 2008, New Orleans, Louisiana. 2008 CDROM. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Differences in host response to infection with avian influenza (AI) viruses were investigated by identifying genes differentially expressed in tissues of infected ducks. Clear differences in pathogenicity were observed among ducks inoculated with five H5N1 HPAI viruses. Virus titers in tissues correlated with severity of the disease. A complete chicken genome microarray was used to determine differences in gene expression in the spleen in response to infection with the AI viruses. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR was also performed on selected genes related to host response. The results provide important information on different mechanisms potentially induced by avian influenza viruses to modulate innate immune host response of the ducks. |
