Standard nomenclature for common bean chromosomes and linkage groups. Bean Improvement Cooperative Annual Report. 51:106-107. Interpretive Summary: The location of genes are presented in two forms using two methods, as linkage groups based on genetic information or as chromosomes using cytological information. The correlation of these two classes of ‘maps’ and the establishment of a common nomenclature are critical for ensuring accurate correspondence between studies. In this study, a standard chromosome nomenclature is presented based on linkage group numbering from the widely used Freyre et al. (1998) paper, and the association between the new and previous chromosome nomenclature is presented. This new nomenclature and the correspondence between chromosome and linkage group maps will aid in interpretation and comparison of genetic studies and in the establishment of a common system for presenting common bean genetic data. Technical Abstract: Several DNA-based linkage maps have been developed for common bean including the core common bean linkage map using the BAT93 x Jalo EEP558 recombinant inbred line (RIL) population. Correlation of common bean chromosomes to the genetic linkage groups was completed using RFLP markers to assign each linkage group to a chromosome pair by FISH. Chromosome size is the commonly used cytological criterion for naming chromosomes, yet because chromosome size is highly variable within Phaseolus vulgaris, it is not applicable for chromosome naming. The common bean community has widely used the numbering of linkage groups according to Freyre et al. (1998), B1 to B11, thus the new standard chromosome nomenclature is based on that linkage group numbering. Because chromosomes are always represented with the short arm on top and the long arm on the bottom, linkage groups B1, B2, B3, B4, B6, B9 and B10 were rotated top to bottom. Correspondence between actual and previous chromosome nomenclature is presented. |
