Diseases which challenge global wheat production – the wheat rusts. Pages 89-124 in: Wheat: Science and Trade. B. F. Carver ed. Wiley-Blackwell, A John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Publication, Ames Iowa. Interpretive Summary: This is a chapter on wheat stripe rust in a book entitled “Wheat: Science and Trade”. The chapter provides an overview on various aspects of wheat stripe rust and control, including distribution and epidemiology; origin and historical importance; taxonomy, lifecycle, and host range; genetic variation in the stripe rust populations; and resistance in wheat. The chapter summarizes stripe rust epidemics over the past half century in the US, presents examples of developing resistant cultivars using durable type resistance and appropriate strategies of deploying effective race-specific resistance. Recent discoveries of stripe rust resistance genes and molecular markers also are summarized. The book chapter should serve as a major reference for people interested in wheat stripe rust and the disease control.
