Uso de Cebos para el Control de la Termita de Formosa, Coptotermes formosanus, en Zonas Arboladas en la Ciudad de Nuevo Orleáns. Interpretive Summary: Studies on area-wide management of the Formosan subterranean termite in Biloxi, Mississippi have shown that these termites initiate their infestation in large trees and then move into houses. This study shows that controlling Formosan subterranean termites in trees can result in a substantial suppression of populations around the treated area and that well distributed baits are an effective tool for termite control. Directing our attention to large infested trees instead of houses and buildings, and changing the way area-wide control programs are designed, could greatly improve the effectiveness of these programs to eliminate this invasive pest from large urban areas. Technical Abstract: A total of 220 underground termite stations were installed 1 meter away from the base of trees located in the median area of seven blocks of Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, LA. Aspen wood was used to monitor termite populations. A nutritionally based bait matrix developed by United States Department of Agriculture scientists was used as a carrier for the active ingredient, chitin synthesis inhibitors. Termite populations were significantly reduced after two years of bait treatments, while termite populations in the control area (Old Mint Museum) increased during the same period. |
