Fingerprint of Herb Product by Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry. 2008 BARC Poster Day, April 23, 2008, Beltsville, MD. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Product authentication, quality assurance, and identification of adulterants/contamination are major issues facing the dietary supplement industry. Scutellaria lateriflora is an herb widely used as a remedy for many ailments ranging from rabies to epilepsy. It could be easily contaminated by similar plants such as germander that could cause serious side effects. A method using MALDI MS spectroscopic fingerprints as a high throughput screening technique for Scutellaria was explored. Herbs were grounded into fine powder and extracted with methanol and water. The fingerprints of all the samples by MALDI were obtained. The work demonstrates a new application of MALDI for fingerprinting of small molecules from herb products. |
