Assessing the monophyly of Gnomoniopsis (Gnomoniaceae) based on cultural, morphological, and ribosomal DNA sequences. Meeting Abstract. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: A multigene phylogeny (Sogonov et. al., unpublished) supports a newly circumscribed genus Gnomoniopsis in the family Gnomoniaceae. Gnomoniopsis contains many economically significant pathogens of rosaceous crop plants including strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry. A combined phylogenetic analysis was conducted using morphological, cultural, and sequences from three ribosomal DNA regions: the LSU and RPB2 coding regions and ITS1 and ITS2 intergenic spacers. The phylogenetic relationships of Gnomoniopsis species were examined. Morphological and cultural characteristics were incorporated into a phylogenetic analysis with sequence data. Previous classifications of Gnomoniopsis were based primarily on morphology. This study validates the taxonomic discrepancies identified in previous investigations. Our analyses suggest that the genus Gnomoniopsis as currently delimited is not monophyletic. Increased sampling will be needed to more adequately resolve the phyletic status of this genus. |
