Resistance to Foliar Diseases in Rosa sp. Southern Nursery Association Research Conference. 51:206-208. Interpretive Summary: Fifty cultivars of roses were evaluated for disease resistance to black spot and Cercospora leaf spot. Many rose cultivars were susceptibe to black spot, Cercospora leaf spot, or both.Six cultivars highly resistant to Cercospora leaf spot were susceptible to black spot. In this study, 8 rose cultivars were found with acceptable levels of resistance to both black spot and Cercospora leaf spot. This information will be benefit consumers who purchase roses and Extension specialists who educate the public about plant selection. Technical Abstract: Fifty cultivars of roses were evaluated for disease resistance to black spot and Cercospora leaf spot. Many rose cultivars were susceptibe to black spot, Cercospora leaf spot, or both. Six cultivars that were highly resistant to Cercospora leaf spot were susceptible to black spot (Belinda's Dream, Marchessa Boccella, Marie Pavie, Martha Gonzales, Mary Rose, and Pink Grootendorst). In this study, 8 rose cultivars were much better than the otheres in their resistance to both black spot and Cercospora leaf spot (Archduke Charles, Duchesse de Brabant, Eutin, Louis Philippe, Mrs. B. R. Cant, Mrs. Dudley Cross, and Chestnut Rose). This research resports on the relative resistance, or lack thereof, in many popular bush and shrub roses to foliar diseases. |
