Interpretive Summary: This document provides information for two pecan cultivars, 'Gafford' and 'Lakota'. For each entry, history of origin is presented chronologically, with brief but important details concerning dates, locations and individuals responsible. Nut characters are described using standard descriptors of nut shape and quality. Patterns of phenology and performance are provided, as known.

Technical Abstract: Records are presented concerning the origin and characteristics of two new pecan cultivars: 'Gafford', and 'Lakota'. A "cultivar" is a cultivated variety of the plant. In the pecan industry, cultivars are propagated by grafting. Records of the origin and characteristics of pecan cultivars help nurserymen and scientists indentify and propagate appropriate trees for their areas. 'Gafford' is a disease resistant seedling found in Alabama. 'Lakota' is a controlled cross made by the USDA ARS Pecan Breeding Program and released on the basis of early nut maturity and outstanding nut quality. Pecan cultivars are described on the basis of their origin, nut shape, nut size, percentage kernel, patterns of bloom (when known), and patterns of tree performance.
