Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Tissues were collected, over a 10-year period, from broiler chickens diagnosed with severe H-SMS at the Georgia Poultry Lab, in Oakwood, GA. All samples were stored in tissue culture media, with antibiotics and 15% fetal bovine serum, in an ultra-cold freezer @ -80F. Specimens were homogenized, centrifuged, then filtered through 0.45micron filters, and inoculated into yolk sacs of embryonating SPF chicken eggs. Embryos which died between 72-120 hours post-inoculation were harvested and submitted for molecular testing. Results are summarized in Table 1. No specific virus could be incriminated as the sole etiologic agent of H-SMS. However, the samples which had previously been used to experimentally reproduce H-SMS contained both Chicken Rotavirus and Infectious Bronchitis Virus.
