Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This paper discusses the recommended procedures involved in setting up biosecurity and control programs designed to limit bovine viral diarrhea virus infections in beef cattle operations. For the purpose of these discussions, a working definition of a biosecurity plan was considered to be an organized strategy incorporating recommended procedures designed to prevent or reduce the risk of the introduction of a disease, pathogen, toxin, or negative genetic trait into the herd or population. The working definition of a biocontainment plan was an organized strategy incorporating recommended procedures for a cattle operation designed to manage/control an existing problem such as a disease, pathogen, toxin, or negative genetic trait within a herd or population of cattle.
