Interpretive Summary: The study of taxonomy provides a unified approach to bacterial names and species concepts ensures accurate communication among scientists, regulators and the public. The field of taxonomy is divided into three disciplines: Classification, Nomenclature, and Identification. Whereas there are codified rules for nomenclature, classification and identification are conducted according to the scientific method and are evaluated by peer review. This manuscript covers some of the important elements and misconceptions about each of these disciplines.
