The extent of variation in these small molecules among different potato genotypes is not well characterized. LC-MS analysis of tuber extracts from seven potato genotypes showed that one large source of small molecule variation among these genotypes are the glycoalkaloids. Glycoalkaloids (GAs) are involved in the resistance of potatoes to pathogens and pests, but they also have implications for human health and nutrition. Potato glycoalkaloids are composed of two steroidal alkaloids namely solanidine and spirosolane. We have tentatively identified over 50 different solanidine based and over 40 different spirosolane based glycoalkaloids, many of which appeared to be novel GAs. Results suggested the variety of GAs in potatoes is considerably greater than previously realized. |
