Registration of Five Exotic Germplasm Lines of Cotton Derived From Multiple Crosses Among Gossypium Tetraploid Species. Journal of Plant Registrations. 3:77-80 Interpretive Summary: Fiber quality is low in high yielding cultivars of upland cotton in U.S.A., especially in the mid-south area. Success in breeding for both lint yield and fiber quality was limited in the past because improvement of fiber quality had only been achieved on compensation of yield. Five germplasm lines, SP156, SP177, SP179, SP205, and SP225, derived from wild crosses were released to the public for their superior performance in both lint yield and fiber quality. The yields of these lines are comparable to the high yield cultivars and their fiber quality is comparable to high fiber quality cultivars. The superior traits in these lines are useful for breeders to meet the needs from textile industry for fiber quality and also maintain productivity for cotton growers. Technical Abstract: SP (Species Polycross) germplasm was developed from multiple crosses among Gossypium tetraploid species. SP156, SP177, SP179, SP205, and SP225 were released by Agriculture Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture for their highly desirable combinations of yield, yield components, and fiber properties. The SP lines were tested for yield and fiber quality in 2005, 2006, and 2007 at six years-locations. SP179 and SP225 averaged 1221 and 1348 kg/ha, respectively, for yield in three years trials compared to 1359 kg/ha for DP555BR. Fiber bundle strength of these two lines is 233 and 228 kN m kg-1, respectively, compared to 227 kN m kg-1 for FM960B2R. Yields of SP156, SP177, and SP205 are at least 7% higher than the average, 965 kg/ha, of FM960B2R and PHY72. Strength of SP156, SP177, and SP205 is 241, 238, and 236 kN m kg-1, respectively, compared to 241 kN m kg-1, the average of FM960B2R and PHY72. Span length and short fiber content in these lines are also comparable to FM960B2R and PHY72. |
