Technical Abstract: ‘Prince’ is a new rabbiteye blueberry cultivar developed by the USDA-ARS Thad Cochran Southern Horticulture Laboratory, Poplarville, MS. “Prince’ has a relatively tall and spreading growth habit, grows vigorously, and producing numerous canes. Its high yield potential results from the development of numerous flower-buds arising from vigorous new annual growth. The bloom period for “Prince” in South MS occurs ahead of most other rabbiteye blueberries thus, potential for injury exists when grown in areas prone to frequent Spring-time frosts. Berries of ‘Prince’ ripen earlier than currently grown rabbiteye blueberry cultivars and are medium-size with small picking scars, good color, firmness, and flavor characteristics. ‘Prince’ will enhance opportunities for the mainstream rabbiteye blueberry producer in the Gulf Coast Region to capitalize on premiums prices associated with early-season berries, and optimize profitability in a highly competitive market.
