Use of Coniochaeta ligniaria to Detoxify Fermentation Inhibitors Present in Cellulosic Sugar Streams. In: Hou, C.T., Shaw, J.-F., editors. Biocatalysis and Molecular Engineering. New York: John Wiley and Sons. p. 253-263. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Conversion of biomass to fuels or chemicals is hampered by the presence of fermentation inhibitors that arise during physical-chemical pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Inhibitory compounds formed during pretreatment may prevent efficient fermentation of the biomass sugars to product. Biological abatement is a strategy for inhibitor mitigation that uses a microbe to metabolize the inhibitory organic compounds. Fungal isolate Coniochaeta ligniaria NRRL30616 metabolizes a number of inhibitory compounds including furan and aromatic compounds. Use of C. ligniaria to metabolize and remove inhibitory compounds yields biomass sugars that are suitable for efficient conversion to ethanol by fermentation. |
