Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Many factors can influence farm management decisions. One important factor is economic returns. Staying in farming requires dealing with a wide range of changing conditions. Given these changing conditions, it is particularly important to “get the big decisions right”. This requires evaluating impacts at the whole-farm level. Field research examples are used to demonstrate key considerations including the value of building flexibility into farming systems to take advantage of changing conditions, and the multiple benefits of diversification.
