Interpretive Summary: Among the resin bees is a group of species that belong to the genus Dianthidium subgenus Mecanthidium. These bees build exposed nests composed of resin and gravel on rocks. Two new species in this subgenus are described and a key is provided to identify species in this group. Technical Abstract: Two new species of Dianthidium (Mecanthidium) Michener are described: D. snellingi, sp. nov., from Jalisco, Mexico and D. zapotecum, sp. nov., from Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico. Dianthidium sonorum Michener is synonymized with the highly variable D. macrurum Cockerell. A key to the species is provided. |
