Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The USDA-ARS produce safety project conducts research to understand pathogen microbial ecology and its effects on decontamination efficacy, to develop biological-based intervention strategies for pathogen reduction and to develop new effective chemical and physical decontamination interventions and/or improve the performance of current interventions. Active research topics are related to biofilm development, bio-suppressive and bio-antagonist technologies, and physical and chemical treatments such as the use of hot water pasteurization, gaseous chlorine dioxide, cold plasma, hydrogen peroxide vapor, and ionizing radiation alone or in combination. This presentation will summarize the project’s research accomplishments to date, and describe the impact of those accomplishments with respect to industry adoption, regulatory enactments and research leadership. Finally, the presentation will provide a description of key areas for future research directions. |
