This plant species produces a compound that retards the growth of many native plants, giving it a competitive advantage. Spotted knapweed has been identified in several areas of Alaska. A description of the plant and where it has been found in Alaska is provided so that attendees will be able to detect new infestations. Information on the morphology and physiology of this species is presented with the goal of identifying when it is most susceptible to control efforts. Examples of effective control measures are presented with an emphasis on those that may work best in the areas of Alaska where it has been identified. A brief discussion of other invasive knapweed species is given. A case is made that because this plant species has been detected in Alaska when there are only a few infestations, it may be possible to eradicate if appropriate control measures are initiated. |
