Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The USDA-ARS strawberry breeding program at Beltsville, Maryland is developing cultivars for three production periods: spring, summer, and fall/winter/spring (in collaboration with Dr. Fumi Takeda, USDA-ARS, Kearneysville, WV). All three use raised beds, buried trickle irrigation, and plastic mulch. The fall/winter/spring system uses tunnels for protection from cold. At this point, we have potential cultivars spring and summer production, and seedling selections for the fall/winter/spring system. For the spring production system, we have two potential cultivars with high yield and large, attractive, flavorful, berries that hold their size. For the summer system, we have one potential cultivar that produces medium-sized berries with outstanding flavor until fall freezes start. It has performed well in Beltsville and at high elevations (2500ft) in western Maryland, in collaboration with Dr. Harry Swartz, University of Maryland.
