Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Due to the high antigenic variability of avian influenza virus, vaccines need to be continually updated to maintain adequate protection to evolving field strains. One possible approach, to mitigating the effects of antigenic change, is to use vaccines containing more than one isolate of the same subtype from different lineages. Initial work was conducted with both H5 and H7 viruses in challenge studies in chickens, to evaluate this approach. Using mortality and virus shed as metrics of protection, initial studies indicate that the number of vaccinations may be more important than the combinations of isolates used in the vaccines.
