Registration of CRB 252, an upland cotton germplasm line possessing superior fiber quality traits. Journal of Plant Registrations. 4(3):236-239. Interpretive Summary: To remain competitive in the global market and to meet increasing processing and end-use demands, U.S. upland cotton requires continuous fiber quality improvement. Currently there are limited genetic resources available for fiber quality improvement and many of these resources exhibit narrow regional adaptation that restrict their utility. CRB 252 has been developed and tested across the cotton belt to provide public and private breeders with a broadly adapted resource for fiber improvement. CRB 252 possesses superior fiber attributes and an acceptable yield potential that appears to be stable across production environments. Seed of CRB 252 is available in small quantities, upon request, to public and private breeders and geneticists for use in their cotton improvement efforts. Technical Abstract: The upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) germplasm line CRB 252 was developed, evaluated, and jointly released in 2009 by the Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and Cotton Incorporated. The purpose of the release was to provide a broadly adapted, high fiber quality resource for facilitating fiber improvement efforts across the U.S. cotton belt. CRB 252 originated from the cross SG 248/PHY 72//ST 474/Maxxa, followed by individual plant selection in the F2 and F3 generations at the low desert location of Maricopa, AZ and F3.5 progeny selection at five locations distributed across the cotton belt. Evaluation of CRB 252 occurred in thirteen location-year environments at Florence, SC; Blackville, SC; Tifton, GA; Plains, GA; Alexandria, LA; Maricopa, AZ; and Shafter, CA in 2007 and 2008. CRB 252 displayed fiber length and micronaire values superior to those of high fiber quality check cultivars, and its strength and short fiber content were equivalent to an Acala high fiber quality check. In an across-location analysis, the lint yield of CRB 252 was superior to the high fiber quality Acala check cultivar and did not differ from the other fiber quality check cultivar. CRB 252 is an excellent source of fiber quality, with acceptable yield potential that appears to be stable across production environments. |
