Sub-Inhibitory Concentrations of the Antibiotic Florfenicol Reduces Invasion in Isolates of Multi-Drug Resistant Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 [abstract]. Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases. p. 26. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Virulence can be enhanced in certain bacteria that are exposed to sub-lethal levels of antibiotics. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104 is resistant to five different antibiotics, including florfenicol. Using real-time PCR and a tissue culture invasion assay, we investigated the impact of florfenicol on Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 to determine whether alterations in the invasion rate occur during florfenicol exposure. Our results indicate that florfenicol decreases invasion of Salmonella DT104 at sub-inhibitory levels. Thus, sub-therapeutic levels of the antibiotic florfenicol do not enhance Salmonella DT104 virulence. |
