Interpretive Summary: Parasitic wasps attack insects that cause billions of dollars of damage to crops and forests annually. The wasps treated in this paper likely attack wood-boring beetle larvae based on host use for closely related species. Increased knowledge of these wasps is essential for understanding their role in regulating wood boring beetle populations. Two wasp species new to science are named, described, and differentiated from morphologically similar species in this paper. This paper will be useful to scientists conducting research on these wasps and their likely beetle hosts. Technical Abstract: Two new species, Heterospilus belokobylskiji Kula and Heterospilus vincenti Kula, from the Nearctic Region are described and differentiated from all other New World species of Doryctinae that exhibit brachyptery or aptery. They are the first brachypterous species of Heterospilus Haliday known in the New World and increase the total number of brachypterous species in the genus to four worldwide. |
