In: Proceedings of 2010 Cornell Nutrition Conference for Feed Manufacturers, October 19-21, 2010, East Syracuse, New York. p. 105-112. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: At the time of his untimely death in 2009, ARS scientist Dr. James B. Russell had established himself as the premier rumen microbiologist of his generation. Dr. Russell’s many contributions to the field, including much of the early work on the Cornell Net Carbohydrate System model, were the product of his strong dairy upbringing, outstanding work ethic, superb “big picture” intellect, and great attention to the process of communicating his research results. An analysis based on reflections of former students and colleagues provides insight into Dr. Russell’s career successes, and how his work will continue to influence the field of rumen microbiology. |
