Hygienisierung in der Fischzucht mittels Per-essigsäure (Disinfection of water with PAA: State of the investigations) [abstract]. Institute of Inland Fisheries. Available: www.ifb-potsdam.de/swfs/meinelt.htm. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: There are very few therapeutic agents against aquaculture ectoparasites in Germany. Peracetic Acid (PAA) has been referred to as the best disinfective agent in the world, but it has not been used much here in aquaculture. We currently use this compound in ‘treatment crisis’ situations because there are not suitable approved compounds. This presentation will discuss the state of the investigations of PAA including: background of its use, chemical properties, fish toxicity studies, advantages and disadvantages of its use, and results of In vitro and In vivo studies with emphasis on Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and ongoing research with Saprolegnia sp. We will also present an example in pond trout aquaculture and some of the first results of its use in recirculation aquaculture systems and the impact of a PAA-treatment on filter bacteria. |
