Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Scientists had originally recognized that certain diseases were associated to dietary deficiencies. To determine the precise mechanistic and metabolic actions scientists developed animal models to determine the roles of specific nutrients in animal health. Several animal models have been developed and have been essential in elucidating the mechanisms of the disease state and the development of a treatment. Rainbow trout have proven themselves as a prime research organism and are now being used in the study of nutrients related to the development of sustainable plant-based diets.
