Drainage water management for water quality protection. Journal of Soil and Water Conservation. 65(6):131A-136A. Interpretive Summary: An interpretive summary is not required. Technical Abstract: Land drainage has been central to the development of North America since colonial times. Increasingly, agricultural drainage is being targeted as a conduit for pollution, particularly nutrient pollution. The export of agricultural drainage water and associated pollutants to surface water can be managed and controlled, to an extent, using a combination of in-field, edge-of-field, and off-site practices. An array of options, established and nascent, are available within drainage water management that show promise. This overview showcases areas within drainage water management that provide opportunities for water quality protection and enhancement. |
