Interpretive Summary: Traditionally, weed management activities are only initiated after a weed has become a major economic problem in an area. This guide provides a process for individuals interested in developing community based weed prevention areas (WPA) to take a proactive approach to invasive species management. A weed prevention area is a cooperatively managed area focusing on preventing weed infestations and on programs for implementing early management efforts. Establishing a weed prevention area guide is divided into five steps to encourage interested landowners and citizens to organize an effort. These steps include 1) Introducing the WPA concept, 2) Organize the WPA, 3) Develop the action plan, 4) Implement the plan and 5) Evaluate the program. Included in this guide are useful resources to help a group plan and implement a WPA for each step for developing a WPA. Appendix contains worksheets and additional information for community groups.
