Natural Resources Research Update (NRRU). NRRU only. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) causes Johne’s disease, a chronic intestinal infection that affects ruminants such as dairy cows. This disease can cause losses of as much as $200,000 per year in a herd of 1,000 dairy cows. The continued global increase in the number of cases of Johne’s disease among dairy cattle suggests that there are hidden sources of contamination in the farm environment where susceptible animals may be routinely exposed to MAP.
