Interpretive Summary: U.S. agricultural producers and military planners share a strong commitment to the commercial-scale development of ready-to-use biofuels that can be sustainably produced using plant-based materials harvested from farms, forests, and other rural lands. Researchers in private business, government, and universities will need to unleash their creativity and skills in new ways to overcome the challenges in producing abundant and cost-competitive biofuels that can be used to power aircraft, ships, and ground vehicles. This article offers a step-by-step outline on how to meet the need for domestically-produced biofuels, as well as information on activities within USDA and other organizations that are helping to create sustainable supply chains of biofuels suitable for military, aviation, and commercial uses.
