Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: US 71655-014 is a fire blight resistant pear scion selection developed by the USDA, Agricultural Research Service. Preliminary trials indicated several positive attributes including precocity, high annual production, attractive fruit, long storage life, and good consumer acceptance. In 2005, a replicated trial was established to compare orchard performance of US 71655-014 with ‘Beurré d’Anjou’, the primary winter pear cultivar in the Hood River production district and in the USA. US 71655-014 was more precocious and had significantly higher flower count, fruit set, yield efficiency, and annual and five-year cumulative yields. However, fruit size was significantly smaller. Preliminary data from crop thinning trials show significant improvements in average fruit size and percentage of fruits in larger size-classes.
