A century and a half of research on the Stable Fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), 1862-2011: an annotated bibliography. ARS 173. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Washington, DC. Interpretive Summary: The stable fly is a primary pest of cattle in the United States, estimated to cause more than $1 billion in economic losses annually. It is a cosmopolitan pest affecting other livestock, wild animals, pets and humans; it has even been seen feeding on cold-blooded vertebrates. Infestations of stable flies can cause dissention and even litigations at the rural-urban interface. They also can be an economical problem affecting recreation areas such as Florida beaches. The very painful bite and very persistent nature of stable flies has stimulated investigations into methods to control them that have been ongoing for over a century. A resulting large and widely dispersed amount of research reports on stable fly biology, ecology, genetics, physiology, and importance as a vector of disease causing agents were most recently summarized in a bibliography that was published in 1983. This current bibliography represents an update of literature published since 1980; it has been gathered from journals and other resources available to the authors and a selected number of articles have been annotated. Some of the literature from pre-1980 was included if copy could be ascertained. This will provide a resource for current and upcoming scientists interested in researching stable flies as well as for other people interested in learning about these pests. Technical Abstract: The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, is a cosmopolitan pest of livestock, wild animals, pets and humans. It is a primary pest of cattle in the United States, estimated to cause more than $1 billion in economic losses annually. It also causes dissention at the rural-urban interface and is a problem in recreation areas such as Florida beaches and the Great Lakes. Due to its pestiferous nature and painful bite, methods to control stable flies have been investigated for over a century. A large amount of research has been reported on stable fly biology, ecology, genetics, physiology, and vector competence. In this bibliography literature has been gathered from journals and other resources available to the authors and a selected number of articles have been annotated. This bibliography represents an update of literature published since 1980; literature from pre-1980 was included if copy could be ascertained. |
