In: Manzanilla-Lopez, R.H., Marban-Mendoza, N., editors. Practical Plant Nematology. Mexico City, Mexico: Mundi Prensa. p. 359-410. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Although root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne species) can reduce crop yields worldwide, methods for their identification are often difficult to implement. This review summarizes the diagnostic morphological and molecular features for distinguishing the ten major previously described root-knot nematode species from several closely related Meloidogyne spp. Drawings of important diagnostic characters of all the life stages (females, males, and juveniles) illustrating these key features are given, together with information about hosts and geographic distribution. In addition, a brief historical background, updated systematic position, diagnosis of the genus, key to genera of the family Meloidogyninae, and information on various techniques for species identification are presented and discussed. The general techniques for killing, fixing, processing, mounting, using perineal patterns, root staining and differentiating root-knot nematodes from cyst-forming nematodes are presented, together with descriptions of diagnostic characters, general morphology, life cycle, plant-host relationships and management. |
