Publication Type: Abstract Only Publication Acceptance Date: 3/5/2013 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: not required Technical Abstract: As part of our long-term research effort on developing new maize germplasm lines conferring multiple insect resistance at different growth stages, 10 newly-developed maize germplasm lines from the Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) Program were evaluated in 2010 and 2011 for whorl-feeding fall armyworm (FAW) [Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith)(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)] resistance. The experiment also utilized the randomized complete block design. The FAW resistance was assessed on 7 and 14 d after the artificial infestation with the neonate larvae at the 6-leaf (V6) stage. The FAW feeding damage was assessed using the visual damage rating scale of 1-9, where 1 = no damage, and 9 = complete defoliation. In addition, the abundance of the predators was recorded 7 d after the infestation. Ten different taxa of predators were recorded on the plants. Based on fall armyworm damage rating and predator abundance data collected, one germplasm line was identified as fall armyworm resistant, and three other lines identified as moderately resistant to the fall armyworm damage when compared to the susceptible control of the experiment. |
