Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This paper outlines the life and legacy of the late Dr. Ransom L. Baldwin, V. The purpose was to highlight the impact his teaching and research had on the international energy and protein metabolism communities at their fourth international conference. The paper will be presented at the outset of a meeting symposium in Dr. Baldwin's name at the meeting. Through his pioneering animal research and teaching activities, Baldwin created an entire generation of nutritional scientists and altered the basic philosophy and application of agricultural research, education funding, and conduct of agricultural research worldwide. In addition to the scientific and educational impact, it is a matter of historical record that application of his research and findings has led to a major increase in efficiency of animal production and an improvement in the nutritional health of millions of people.
