Technical Abstract: Resistant cultivars are the most desirable approach to disease control in agriculture. Early and late leaf spot are the most important foliar diseases of peanut worldwide. Significant progress for leaf spot resistance in peanut can be achieved through biotechnology. The National Peanut Research Laboratory in Dawson, GA has developed transformed peanuts with disease resistance genes from mustard plants. Initial observation showed that these peanut plants do not exhibit leaf spot symptoms, even without fungicide treatment, compared to diseased controls. Progenies will undergo greenhouse testing to confirm leaf spot resistance. The success of this project will eventually improve yields and profits, while reducing fungicide input costs.
