Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The foreword describes opportunities that soil physics encounters as the global inrest in soils increases. New prospects related to burgeoning development in measurement tecniques are outlined. The benefits of participating in multidisciplinary research are presented. Coupling of soil physical monitoring with the monitoring of other components soil-vegetation-atmosphere systems becomes a must. Ares of soil physics are discussed where the knowledge needs to be substantially improved. A critical evaluation of soil physics products is called for. Measuring, modeling and data integration create application of soil physics in research areas impacting global issues where soil physics (and soil science) can make important contributions. Soil physics as a relatively young discipline will greatly benefit from taking on these big challenges. The foreword will be useful for the book readership as a context to place the book content.
