Stevesaltica, a new genus of moss and leaf-litter inhabiting flea beetles from Bolivia (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini). Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington. 116(2):159-171. Interpretive Summary: Leaf beetles are among the most important insects affecting U.S. agriculture. Many are serious pests and feed on crops destroying valuable plants costing millions of dollars annually. Others are important biological control agents that can be used to destroy unwanted and invasive weeds. This work provides description and illustrations for a new genus and two species of flea beetles from Bolivia to allow for their identification and proper classification. This study will be useful to taxonomists, evolutionary biologists, and anyone interested in plant-feeding beetles. Technical Abstract: A new genus (Stevesaltica) with two new species (S. normi and S. perdita) from Bolivia is described and illustrated. It is similar to Exoceras Jacoby. An identification key for all flea beetle genera known to occur in mosses in the Western Hemisphere is provided. |
