Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The sunflower disease chapter is part of the Sunflower Oilseeds Monograph, which will be a new publication in the AOCS Oilseeds Monograph series. The monograph contains an overview and history of sunflower crop development, how the oilseed is cultivated, how the oilseed is produced, how the seed is processed into usable ingredients for food and industrial applications, and the latest technologies. The disease chapter describes diseases of widespread importance such as downy mildew, Phomopsis stem canker, sunflower rust, Sclerotinia head rot, Sclerotinia stalk rot and wilt, and Verticillium wilt as well as diseases of regional or sporadic occurrence such as Alternaria leaf and stem spot, bacterial stalk and head rot, parasitic broomrape, charcoal rot, Phoma black stem, powdery mildew, Rhizopus head rot, Septoria leaf spot and Southern blight. Individual disease descriptions includes an introduction, history, pathogen and symptom description, disease cycle and damage, and management. |
